When to Change Transmission Fluid

What Transmission Do I Have

Do you know how to tell when it’s time to have your transmission fluid changed? Our team at Ira Lexus of Manchester has prepared this quick overview with a few of those telltale signs so that our fellow Bedford, Manchester, and Merrimack drivers can be well prepared.

To begin our discussion about when transmission fluid needs to be changed, we thought we’d cover what the process itself actually entails. When transmission fluid is changed, the process is referred to as a “flush.” During a transmission flush, the old fluid is flushed out. After fresh oil and cleaning solvents are put through the system to thoroughly clean the transmission, new fluid is pumped in.

Now that you know what is involved in a transmission flush, let’s go over the signs that let you know when you need to have service done. SCHEDULE SERVICE TODAY!

TransmissionIf you’re experiencing the following transmission issues, there’s an extremely good chance your transmission fluid is the culprit:

• Grinding noises
• Shaking during shifting
• Hesitation between gears
• Difficult and gradual acceleration

If you notice wet spots beneath your car, this could mean that your car is leaking transmission fluid. When examining the fluid on the ground, keep in mind that transmission fluid has a relatively thin consistency and its color can be anywhere from clear red to light brown.

Transmission Fluid Warning LightAmong other things, the check engine light is a key indication there could be an issue with the transmission. If the check engine light pops on suddenly, be sure to have it looked into by a professional mechanic as soon as possible.

Burning smells are a definite clue that it may be time to change the transmission fluid.

If you’re witnessing any of these issues and decide to inspect the transmission fluid’s condition by yourself so as to determine whether or not it needs to be changed, these are a few things to keep in mind:

• Cleanliness: If you’re seeing debris and bubbles in the fluid, have it flushed right away.
• Color: We’ve already mentioned that the color of transmission fluid can range from clear red to light brown. If it looks to be any darker than that, it’s not likely to be healthy. Be sure to have it flushed if it’s dark brown or black. A black coloring could be the result of a serious problem with the transmission and it should be serviced immediately.
• Odor: If your fluid is healthy, it shouldn’t have much of a smell. Watch out for any hint of burning. If there is a burning smell, the transmission will need to be looked at by a technician.
• The level of the fluid: Check the fluid’s level to make sure it’s up to the fill line. If it’s below the line, go ahead and refill it.
